GoviEx delivers feasibility study for $343m Niger uranium project

Canadian developer GoviEx has confirmed the strength of its Madaouela project, in Niger, delivering a positive feasibility study at a time when inflationary pressures are having a significant impact on the development of new projects and operating mines. The feasibility study, prepared by SRK Consulting and SGS Bateman, projects an initial capital outlay of $343-million for a mine that will produce 50.8-million pounds of U3O8 over a 19-year mine life.

SAIMM appoints Zelmia Botha as president

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has appointed coal and heavy minerals miner Exxaro Resources commissioning manager Zelmia Botha as president of the institute. She is the fourth woman to head the 125-year-old organisation since its inception in 1894. The SAIMM has local and international links that are aimed at disseminating knowledge and assisting members to source information regarding technological developments in the mining, metallurgical and related sectors.

Rio Tinto CEO makes clear that offer is final on giant copper mine

Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm made it clear Tuesday that its offer is final to take over a company that is behind one of the world’s largest copper mines. Speaking during an interview at Bloomberg News headquarters in New York, Stausholm said the world’s second-largest miner has made a full offer to acquire full ownership of Turquoise Hill Resources. Rio will not make any more offers if it’s rejected by minority shareholders, despite criticism from a top investor saying the offer undervalued the project.

South Star receives construction permit for Brazil graphite mine

Vancouver-based South Star Battery Metals has received the construction permit for its Santa Cruz graphite mine from the municipality of Itabela, in Brazil. The municipal permit was the final approval needed for Phase 1 construction to begin in earnest, CEO Richard Pearce reports.

TSX-V-listed Lithium Ionic has announced a C$25-million private placement to fund exploration and development work at its mineral properties and for general corporate working capital purposes. BHP coal mine workers in Australian state set to vote on industrial action

Workers at four mines of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), which owns Australia's largest metallurgical coal fields, will vote on strike action over working conditions and job security, their union said on Wednesday. The possibility of industrial action at some sites of BHP Group's joint venture with a unit of Mitsubishi Corp in Australia's Queensland state comes as prices slump due to weaker steel demand in China.

Australian Potash improves Lake Wells economics

An economic analysis of higher output at the Lake Wells sulphate of potash (SOP) project, in Western Australia, has improved the project’s economics. ASX-listed Australian Potash on Wednesday told shareholders that by increasing production from the planned 170 000 t/y of SOP to 205 000 t/y, the project’s net present value would increase by 65%, from A$614-million to A$1.01-billion, while its internal rate of return would increase from 21% to 22%.

Toro puts a cost on Lake Maitland

Capital cost estimates for a standalone uranium/vanadium operation at Lake Maitland, at the Wiluna project, in Western Australia, amount to A$270-million, or $202.5-million. ASX-listed Toro Energy on Wednesday said that the scoping-level estimation of the capital cost had been completed by SRK Consulting Australasia and Strategic Metallurgy.

Rio Tinto CEO says copper outlook 'challenged' in near term

Copper’s short-term outlook faces pressures from supply-chain obstructions and decades-high inflation, impacting demand for the metal critical in everything from buildings to automobiles to mobile phones, according to the head of the world’s second-largest mining company. “The short-term outlook might look a little bit challenged,” Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm said in an interview at Bloomberg Headquarters in New York.

Teck cuts Q3 coal guidance, reports Elkview outage

Canadian diversified major Teck Resources has lowered its third-quarter steelmaking coal sales guidance, following an outage at the Elkview plant and labour action at Westshore Terminals. The company’s sales guidance has been lowered to between 5.5-million and 5.9-million tonnes, compared with its previously guided range of 5.8-million and 6.2-million tonnes.

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has welcomed statements by the federal Treasurer acknowledging the importance of the resources sector to Australia’s economy. Speaking at a press conference in Canberra, ahead of the Budget which is some five weeks away, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said that the Budget deficit for 2021-22 would show an improvement of nearly A$50-billion from what was previously expected, with A$28-billion of that driven by higher-than-expected revenues.
