A blast at a Czech coal shaft killed 13 people, making it the country’s deadliest mining disaster in almost three decades. The workers at the CSM mine in the east of the country, 12 of them from neighboring Poland, died after methane exploded about 880 m underground on Thursday night, said Ivo Celechovsky, a spokesman for the facility’s State-owned operator OKD.

Gautam Adani’s long quest to build a coal mine in the Australian outback faces another setback, with the Queensland state government refusing to sign off on the company’s plans before further studies into the project’s environmental impact are complete. “Two plans are yet to be approved before any significant disturbance can commence at the Carmichael coal mine,” Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science said in a media release on Friday.

The head of Mexico's mining industry said the new government does not seek to implement drastic changes in the sector, cancel concessions or raise royalties that companies pay to extract minerals. At the end of last month, shares of Mexico's main mining companies fell more than 10% after the party of new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador made a proposal in the Senate that would toughen rules for the sector.
