Pretoria – A triumphant Julius Malema says he had attained his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of South Africa (Unisa) despite intensive persecution by the African National Congress and state agencies.

On Wednesday night, shortly after being conferred with his degree, Economic Freedom Fighters leader Malema told journalists that he had gone through persecution.

“There was a point I had to write exams, then afterwards go to court when the ANC persecuted me. Throughout that period, we had to study, at the same time go through the persecution and the courts. Many of you will remember that we had to go through the DC (disciplinary committee) of the ANC while studying at the same time,” said Malema at the ZK Matthews Hall at Unisa’s main campus.

“Sars had to come and take the tables we were studying on. We had to go and look for alternative tables to study. The whole thing was just an intention to destroy an individual. I refused to succumb to the agenda of my enemies. I refused to allow my enemies to determine my destination. I’m in charge of my destination and my journey.”

Malema said he was now moving on to study for an honours degree in philosophy.

“We’ve completed a junior degree, we are now going to an honours. We will continue to study because studying is permanent,” said Malema.

He said studying had opened his eyes.

“The more we read, the more we realise that we don’t know. Those who do not read think they know. That is when a country becomes a problem because those in leadership refuse to accumulate knowledge,” said Malema.

He paid tribute to his grandmother, wife, family and friends.

Earlier, ululation, thumping, whistling and clapping echoed inside the hall as Malema walked on the red carpet to be conferred his degree.

Malema’s relatives, rose from the front row, joining the loud cheers in the ZK Mathews Hall.

After being capped, the charismatic leader of the opposition party raised a clenched right fist, smiling.

Senior EFF leaders and parliamentarians, including Floyd Shivambu, Godrich Gardee, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and Magdalene Moonsamy were in attendance, sitting behind Malema’s family. They all rose, cheering as Malema walked on the red carpet to be capped.

Malema graduated with a BA degree majoring in political science.
