Durban - A mother dragged her two children to safety after the bakkie they were travelling in rolled 70 metres down an embankment.

According to police and paramedics who attended to the scene, the mother was driving the bakkie, with her two children, a boy aged four and a girl aged six, as passengers, when the accident occurred on the Willowfontein Road near Imbali on Thursday.

Police believe the woman was navigating the flooded road, which was severely damaged by the heavy rainstorm the previous night, when she lost control of the vehicle and rolled down the embankment.

ER24 spokesman, Russel Meiring, confirmed that when they arrived on the scene, they found the bakkie on its roof and the mother and her children sitting nearby.

“On assessment, paramedics found that the mother and her two children had sustained moderate injuries.

All three patients were treated for their injuries and taken to hospital,” Meiring said.

A traffic official on the scene said that from what they could establish, the mother had managed to get her children out of the vehicle and calmed them down until help arrived.

“It could have been much worse.

“It is a miracle that they escaped with minor injuries,” the traffic official said.
