Snaps of cold damage apricot trees in Armenia

YEREVAN, March 18. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Ministry of Agriculture said snaps of cold March 18 overnight have caused damages to apricot trees in some regions across the Ararat Valley. It said the least affected orchards are in the Ararat region, where visible damages were registered only in some communities.

"Partial and severely damaged apricot orchards were registered in Artashat and Massis areas as well as in the communities near the airport Zvartnots," the ministry said in a statement.

According to preliminary reports, noticeably are damaged apricot orchards in Etchmiadzin, Armavir and Baghramyan areas, as well as in Areni and Rind communities in Vayots Dzor region, while orchards in Vayk were not damaged at all. No damages were reported also from the southern Meghri and northeastern Tavush regions.

The ministry said more complete and accurate information about the extent of the damage sustained to apricot orchards by the frost will be available in a week.

According to Weather Service, the temperature in the Ararat Valley, Tavush, Vayots Dzor and Syunik regions is likely to drop March 19 overnight to 2-5 degrees below zero and sustain fresh damages to the orchards. -0-
