Cape Town - A teenager said she played dead to survive after a gunman opened fire on her and her boyfriend.

The 17-year-old matriculant was one of two people who were shot and wounded in Gerald Street, Valhalla Park, on Wednesday night.

The girl was hit in her chest, right arm and right leg.

Angelo Abrahams, 42, was also shot in his lower back and left leg when the gunman suddenly opened fire around 8pm.

The girl’s grandmother, who did not want to be identified, said the teenager had an emergency operation on Thursday afternoon after she was hit by five bullets.

She said the teen and her boyfriend walked to the shop when a car first drove past them before they were attacked.

“With the first shots her boyfriend ran but she must have been too slow.

“She said she fell to the ground when she was hit in her leg.

“She told us she had to lie still and play dead so he would stop shooting,” the granny said.

The girl’s sister added: “My mom and I ran and we saw her lying on the floor, two more shots went off as my mom shielded her.”

Angelo’s wife, Shiyaam Abrahams, 41, said he was on his way home to have supper when the bullets hit him.

“He was rushed to hospital and is doing well,” said the woman.

Constable Nasiphi Same said the suspects fled by car: “Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.”
