|||Port Elizabeth – The Port Elizabeth Flying Squad has arrested a man on charges of bribery, dealing, and possession of drugs after he was caught with 41 000 mandrax tablets, police said on Tuesday.
“The excellent arrest and confiscation by the members is applauded as we embark on closing all avenues for drug dealers and syndicates,” said provincial police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu.
“The battle to make this country a safer place takes all of us, however, it starts with the men and women in blue.”
Taking up this task, said Naidu, was the PE Flying Squad who on Monday night followed a green Ford Figo in the Port Elizabeth township of Zwide.
At about 9:30pm, constables Severiano Blundin and Siphulele Msindwana stopped and searched the vehicle.
Inside they found 40 packets containing 41 000 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R2 million.
The vehicle occupant, a 47-year-old KwaZakhele man, was also in possession of a “substantial amount of cash”, R100 000, which he allegedly used in an attempt to bribe the police.
The vehicle – which was a rented one – was confiscated, along with the drugs and money.
The suspect is due to appear in court soon.
