Escaped rapist back behind bars
The Department of Correctional Services is investigating the escape of a convicted rapist, who has since been recaptured, from St Albans prison.
|||Port Elizabeth - The Department of Correctional Services in the Eastern Cape has launched an investigation following the escape of a convicted rapist.
The convict who escaped from St Albans prison just outside Port Elizabeth has since been placed back behind bars.
Sicelo Tshamlambo was re-arrested on Monday night on a smallholding in Rocklands.
Tshamlambo, who is serving life imprisonment, escaped from the prison textile production factory on Monday, with officials only realising he was missing at about lunch time.
Correctional Services Spokesperson, Zama Feni, said that security officials re-arrested him about 10 kilometers from St Albans Prison while he was at petrol station.
Feni said that the convict had previously enjoyed privileges which included him working at a textile production workshop at the prison.
Feni added that his privileges could possibly be forfeited, pending the outcome of the investigation.
“We have instituted an investigation into the matter, we want to get to the bottom of how this happened. He will now also face charges of attempted escape from lawful custody,”said Feni.
