14-year-old held for farmer’s murder

A 14-year-old is one of six suspects arrested just hours after the body of an Ixopo farmer was discovered with large open wounds to his abdomen.

Durban – Six people were arrested on Monday for the murder of a KwaZuu-Natal farmer barely hours after his body was discovered on his farm in the Ixopo area.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that 67-year old Anton Phillip Verwey’s body was found by his wife on their farm. He was lying face down and had two large open wounds to his abdomen.

Police and a local security company were alerted.

“Through the intensive investigation by the members of the Ixopo detectives, Kokstad K9 unit, and Magma Security, six suspects aged between 14 and 24 were apprehended,” said Zwane.

They were found to be in possession of two bicycles, a plasma TV, computer, laptop, cell phones and other items that belonged to the Verweys.

The six face charges of murder and house robbery and are expected to appear in the Ixopo Magistrate’s court soon.

It was not immediately clear if Verwey had been stabbed or shot dead.
