At about 5pm on Tuesday, two men, aged 19 and 21, were shot in the head and died. Four others between the ages of 11 and 34 were injured in the shooting at Stone Court in Lavender Hill.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said circumstances surrounding the shooting incident were stilll under investigation.
Shafiek October, father of injured Faried October, 19, said he did not understand how “gangs can shoot at innocent people”. “I wasn’t there at the time of the shooting, but I heard the gangs just opened fire at my son and his friends,” he said.
October said his son was shot in the shoulder.
He said his son did not belong to any gang, but it was unfortunate he was at the block where he was shot. “He is lucky to be alive and he is still in hospital,” he said. October said that Faried grew up “a good child” who loved playing soccer.
Van Wyk said a murder and attempted murder case was opened for investigation. No arrests had been made as yet and that the investigation was continuing.
Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert Daniels said two adult men were shot dead and two others, an adult man and woman, were rushed to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. He said the shooting incident happened in Lavender Hill on Tuesday afternoon and that the deceased sustained gunshot wounds to the head.
MEC for Community Safety Dan Plato said gang-related shootings were “getting out of hand”.
“It’s amazing how many illegal guns are in the hands of gangs, and I’m glad the president announced that the gang unit is coming back to put an end to this violence,” said Plato.
He said police needed to play a bigger role in implementing laws because the conviction rate was very low.
