Proofpoint soars after raising guidance, beating on earnings

Proofpoint Inc. beat earnings expectations in a report Thursday and increased its expectations for the year, leading to a big after-hours spike for the company's stock. The security-software company reported a loss of $38.3 million, or 92 cents a share, on sales of $89.9 million in the second quarter; after adjusting for stock-based compensation and an extremely long list of other factors, the company claimed a profit of 6 cents a share. ETrade revenue up as volume recovers after Brexit

E*Trade Financial Corp. said its second-quarter revenue rose 10% as trading picked up and its allowance for loan losses shrunk, though the pace of the online broker's new account openings slowed. The results beat Wall Street expectations. "The quarter closed in a frenzy of market activity that impelled a single-day record of net buying as customers seized opportunities following sharp market declines," Chief Executive Paul Idzik said, referring to the steep market selloff in the wake of the U.K.'s decision to exit the European Union on June 23.

Elon Musk's latest "master plan" for Tesla Motors Inc to develop an electric commercial truck, a public bus, a pickup and systems to enable fully autonomous driving could cost $2 billion to $3 billion or more, experts and analysts said Thursday. Musk did not lay out a budget for his latest strategy, revealed on Wednesday, to expand Tesla into a broader range of vehicle markets as well as ride services and solar energy systems. The Tesla chief executive also did not explain how the company planned to pay for the new products he envisioned.

Visa earnings drop on deal-related charges

Visa Inc.'s quarterly earnings fell 76%, hurt by charges tied to the acquisition of its European operations, while its revenue and payments volume rose. "While little has changed in the global economic environment, and cross-border commerce continues to be challenged by a strong U.S. dollar, domestic consumer spend across the globe remains strong and resilient," Chief Executive Charlie Scharf said.

Membership in the coffee giant's loyalty program increased 18% year-over-year to 12.3 million active members in the US, the company reported on Thursday.
