Personal data protection may be strengthened in Kazakhstan’s Constitution

Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstan is considering constitutional amendments to explicitly protect citizens’ personal data from illegal collection, storage, and use, including through digital technologies.
The proposal was announced by Mazhilis deputy Snezhanna Imasheva during the second meeting of the Constitutional Reform Commission.

“It is proposed to clarify Article 18 by expanding the constitutional right to privacy and personal and family confidentiality to include explicit protection of personal data from unlawful collection, processing, storage, and use, including through digital technologies,” Imasheva said.

According to the deputy, the proposed amendment would also establish the state’s obligation to ensure clear and transparent rules for handling personal data, as well as responsibility for data leaks and abuse.
