Kazakh citizens may be detained 'like in American movies'

0

Tengrinews.kz — Kazakh citizens should be informed of all their rights at the moment of detention. This proposal was voiced by Mazhilis deputy Snezhanna Imasheva during the second meeting of the Commission on Constitutional Reform.

According to the proposed amendment, it is suggested to introduce a mandatory explanation of a person’s rights at the moment of detention. Every detainee would be informed of the grounds for restricting their freedom as well as their legal rights.

A similar practice exists in the United States under the so-called 'Miranda warning'. When a person is detained, police officers are required to inform them of their right to remain silent, that anything they say can be used against them in court, and of their right to a lawyer. If a detainee cannot afford legal representation, a state-appointed lawyer must be provided.

The introduction of mandatory rights notification in Kazakhstan would essentially mirror this principle, ensuring that detainees are clearly informed of their rights and the reasons for their detention.

Earlier, it was reported that Kazakhstan may also reduce the maximum period of detention without a court decision.

It was also previously announced that changes are planned to the country’s election law. In particular, individuals convicted of corruption-related, serious, or especially serious crimes may be barred from serving as members of election commissions.
