Big Game: What to know before Stanford visits Cal Memorial Stadium

Series history: Stanford leads the Big Game series 65-50-1. Cal has won the past three meetings and four of the past five. Stanford won 14-10 in the first matchup on March 19, 1892 in San Francisco.

Stanford storylines: Stanford is coming off its first win over a ranked opponent in three years, scoring 17 points in the final seven minutes to stun then-No. 22 Louisville 38-35. Emmett Mosley V set a true freshman program record with 13 catches (for 168 yards) and three touchdowns, and senior Emmet Kenney kicked a career-long 52-yarder at the buzzer. … Stanford hasn’t scored more than 24 points in the Big Game since 2016, a trend that seems unlikely to stop this year. The Cardinal ranks 16th out of 17 ACC teams in points and yards, ahead of only Florida State.

Cal storylines: The Bears have two games remaining to win once and secure bowl eligibility for a second straight season. Cal closes its regular-season schedule on Nov. 30 at No. 13 SMU (9-1), which has won its past seven games . . . With a victory, Justin Wilcox would become just the fourth Cal coach to win at least four straight Big Games, joining Andy Smith, Stub Allison and Jeff Tedford . . . The Bears are coming off their poorest performance of the season, a 33-25 home defeat to Syracuse in which they trailed 27-7 at halftime. They had won their two previous games . . .

Injuries: Cal — ILB Cade Uluave (questionable), WR Mavin Anderson (doubtful), OG Bastian Swinney (doubtful); Stanford — ILB Tristan Sinclair (questionable).

Stats that matter: Cal sophomore Fernando Mendoza needs 295 yards to become the program’s seventh QB to pass for 3,000 yards in a season . . . Sixteen different Cardinal have made their first collegiate starts, the highest number in the ACC. … Cal senior CB Noah Williams continues to lead the nation with seven interceptions, three more than any other ACC player has . . . Stanford ranks second in the country in fourth down attempts (31). It has converted 17 times . . . The Bears have 30 sacks and lead the nation with 17 interceptions but had just one sack and no picks in the loss to Syracuse last week.
