Stampede at religious event in India kills more than 100, mostly women and children

Authorities say more than 100 people in India were killed in a stampede when a crowd at a religious gathering rushed to leave a makeshift tent. It was not immediately clear what triggered the panic following an event with Hindu figure Bhole Baba in northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh. Local news reports cited authorities who said heat and suffocation in the tent could have been a factor. Video of the aftermath showed the structure appeared to have collapsed. WTO members consider four regional trade agreements

At the meeting of the Committee on Regional Trade Agreements (CRTA) on 2 July, WTO members reviewed four RTAs involving Cambodia, Iceland, India, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Liechtenstein, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. Ambassador Salomon Eheth of Cameroon, the new CRTA chair, also provided an update on RTAs still to be considered by the Committee.

Goods trade posts 1% growth in the first quarter of 2024 after 2023 plateau

The volume of world merchandise trade turned up in the first quarter of 2024 after remaining flat throughout 2023, according to the latest trade statistics released by the WTO. Merchandise trade as measured by the average of exports and imports was up 1.0% in the first quarter compared to the previous quarter. Trade in the first quarter was also up 1.4% compared to the same period in 2023.
