The Truth Behind Chicago’s Injury Report, Losing Streak As Deadline Nears

0

The end of this week has featured one of the most brutal stretches of the NBA schedule in a long time. The Chicago Bulls are in the middle of a stretch where they’re playing four games in five days. This was not the original plan, and it turned into a nightmare because of an extremely rare and obscure game cancellation earlier this month. This slate already forced Matas Buzelis to opt out of the NBA Dunk Contest this season, as one example of the cascading effects of the demanding road ahead. With this schedule coming just before the league’s trade deadline, things are getting spicy in Chicago. Why are so many names on the injury report, and how does the end result affect Arturas Karnisovas’s plan at the cutoff?

Don’t Overthink The Injury Report

One precaution to take this weekend is not to read too much into the names on the injury list or make assumptions on why certain players are taking rest days. Tonight, for instance, they’ve got eight players listed as doubtful or out ahead of tip-off. On the list are Nikola Vucevic and Coby White, two of the hottest trade-market names in the organization, and they’re both listed as rest or management. This typically means they’re being held out in case they are dealt in trades, to prevent injury before including them in a deal.

That is not the case here. Head coach Billy Donovan got ahead of this narrative earlier this week, saying players would be taking rest days during this onslaught of games, and Vucevic and White have specifically been cited as players who don’t typically play back-to-backs or test their bodies during strenuous stretches of the season. This is exactly as it seems, a rest day for Vucevic, and load management for White. They’re both likely to return for tomorrow’s outing.

Losing Won’t Impact The Deadline Strategy

Another narrative floating around that is important to seek the truth on is whether or not Chicago’s record over the next three outings will sway Karnisovas toward a tank or a win-now mindset. This theory would be false. Time and time again, this front office has shown grace for injuries, has carried a wishful mindset when playoff contention is near, and has only used evidence that supports their chosen objective. The Bulls are near the top of the league in games missed to injury, they are only 3.5 games back from a locked playoff seed, and have beaten some of the NBA’s top squads this season. To think that the next few results, or that the current three-game losing skid, will have any impact on AK’s decision-making next week, is irresponsible and oblivious.

If there was any perfect sign to fire sale assets and rebuild a roster, three losses to a dead-last Indiana Pacers team with 12 wins on the year would be it. This, and other horrendous losses, will be ignored. Prepare for an underwhelming, disappointing week, and don’t buy the whispers about the injury report happenings or game results this week making a difference.
