Jared Cannonier knows a thing or two about a five-round main event.

In his seventh UFC headlining opportunity, Cannonier beat the odds by outlasting surging middleweight contender Gregory Rodrigues and finishing him with a knockout flurry in the fourth round. Cannonier snapped a two-fight skid and avoided losing three straight fights for the first time in his career.

All that a month away from his 41st birthday. There were hairy moments for Cannonier to be sure, particularly in the first round when an aggressive Rodrigues found his chin and put him down on the mat. Cannonier relied on his toughness and experience to make it through the opening five minutes before turning the action around. After nearly finishing Rodrigues at the end of Round 3, he needed just 21 seconds for him to seal the deal in Round 4.

Cannonier’s peers were in awe of his comeback performance, with UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad tweeting, “He still got it,” and analyst Alan Jouban writing, “For Cannonier to be able to look that good at 40, and survive that first round. Super impressive stuff.

“Not slowing down.”
