White Sox Sign Andre Lipcius, Adding Competition for Third Base

0

The White Sox have signed infielder Andre Lipcius to a minor league contract which includes a non-roster invite to spring training, per MLB.com’s Scott Merkin.

Lipcius has only 38 MLB plate appearances under his belt, each of which came during the 2023 season while he was a member of the Detroit Tigers. The 26-year-old, put up solid numbers during that small sample size, logging ten hits, a home run, and four RBIs.

He has spent the bulk of his career in the AL Central after getting selected by the Tigers in the third round of the 2019 draft. The former Tennessee Volunteer was traded to the Dodgers last winter but never got a chance to suit up for them after being outrighted before Opening Day.

The third baseman spent the 2024 season with Triple-A Oklahoma City and posted solid numbers. In 140 games, he slashed .271/.351/.458 with 25 homers, 89 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. After not getting called up, he elected minor league free agency and was released by the Dodgers on December 16.

Lipcius can serve as a good depth piece for the White Sox. He fits the mold of many of their targets this offseason since he has a good command of the strike zone and gets on base. He owned a 10.7 percent walk rate last season after drawing 68 free passes. The White Sox also give him his best opportunity for MLB playing time.

Third base is his primary position, but he will see some competition from Miguel Vargas and Bryan Ramos to start the season. Both players are viewed as potential long-term solutions for the club, despite Vargas’s poor showing last season.
