Cole Palmer fever spreads to world of racing as horse brilliantly named after Chelsea star runs

A BIG engine, loads of talent and plenty more to come – not Cole Palmer… but the horse named after him.

Chelsea‘s star player has been a revelation this season and picked up the ‘Cold Palmer’ nickname for his dead-eye killer instinct in front of goal.

Cool Palmer, who finished third on debut, could be a horse to follow for Chelsea fans going forward

He’s proved so popular he’s even applied to trademark his signature shivering celebration.

And now his growing influence has spread to other sports as owners look to inject some of his cool, calm demeanour into their own athletes.

Step – or rather trot – forward Cool Palmer, the four-year-old gelding trained by Fergal O’Brien.

Seemingly named after the Blues player, Cool Palmer could be one to follow for Chelsea fans going forward.

He was backed into 9-2 ahead of his debut in a bumper at Southwell on Monday.

Taking a strong hold he made his move two furlongs from home but just ran out of puff as the winning post emerged.

Still, third was very decent on his first day at school and he gave the impression there is much to build on for owners Sullivan Bloodstock Limited.

They might want to change his silks going forward though, as the owner’s colours are two shades of red more akin to Manchester United.

Trainer O’Brien was happy with what he saw, mind.

He wrote on X: “Despite signs of inexperience, a pleasing debut from Cool Palmer in third here.”

Brothers Dan and Harry Skelton came out on top with their 2-1 fav In The Age, while 17-2 North Of Richmond was second for trainer Alex Hales and jockey Kielan Woods.

Palmer has helped Chelsea to second in the Premier League behind leaders Liverpool and picked up a legion of fans thanks to his antics, noticeably his unreal Panenka penalty against Spurs.

It’s thought trademarking his celebration could go onto make him millions.

Palmer, who also starred for England in Euro 2024, first did it last December during Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Luton Town.

He got the idea from former Manchester City academy teammate Morgan Rogers, who performed it after scoring for Middlesbrough.
