Petr Yan vs. Deiveson Figueiredo took place Nov. 23 at Galaxy Arena in Macau, China. Yan (17-5) and squared off in the main event clash. The fight aired live on ESPN+.

Walkouts

Figueiredo is first out, walking to Daqui pra Sempre by Manu & Simone Mendes. He has the Brazilian flag wrapped around himself like a toga. He’s wearing yellow shorts with a red streak in his hair, and he’s skipping his way to the cage, full of energy.

Yan is the final man to make the walk this morning. He walks out to a song by the Russian rapper Noggano that I cannot spell. He’s out with some energy. He’s in black shorts and stops to hug family before checking in at the cage. Man looks very focused.

Tale of the Tape and Pre-Fight

Yan is 5 years younger, 2.5 inches taller, but has a 1 inch reach disadvantage. Yan is the betting favorite thought at -265 with the comeback on Figueiredo +215.

Joe A. Martinez gets the party started and credit to Macau, this is a lively crowd!

Figueiredo looks LOCKEDIN during his announcement, shifting his weight and staring daggers at Yan. Yan is bouncing and moving, looking less intense and much more loose.

The two men meet in the middle for final instructions and touch gloves. Nothing left to it but to do it. Let’s get busy.

Round 1

Both men out in orthodox and Yan takes the center early, pressing Figueiredo back. Figueiredo in hist trademark wide stance and immediately shoots for a double leg as Yan throws a low kick.

Yan stuffs the attempt but we’re in a clinch and Figueiredo hits a trip and gets a takedown! Early and right where Figueiredo wants. Yan locking him down for now and after a while he creates a scramble. Yan to his knees and Figueiredo holding a front headlock.

Still working from this position and Figueiredo tries to move to the back. Yan ties up and arm and attempts to roll but Figueiredo stays with him. Weird little spot her but Figueiredo gets a hook in. Yan has the arm already across the head to spin though and so we’re stalling for a bit as Figueiredo does get a full body triangle on for a moment but Yan breaks it.

Yan still has that arm though and he uses it to spin and now he’s on top in Figueiredo’s guard with half the round left to go.

Figueiredo tying Yan up here but Yan pushes him into the fence to minimize offense. Not a ton happening here as Yan grinds his elbow into Figueiredo’s face for a moment. Mostly he’s focused on position though and has landed only a few shots. Figueiredo tries to spin his hips but Yan stuffs that.

Now Yan has some posture and he’s landing some punches and elbows here. That space allows Figueiredo to try and scramble inside though as Yan moves to half but Figueiredo is looking for a leg. Yan shuts that down and we go back to full guard but again Yan has posture and lands some punches.

Figueiredo creates space and stands but Yan lands a good knee as Figueiredo gets out and with short time nothing happens on the feet.

Round 2

That was a very even round. Both men basically had exactly 2:30 of control time but Yan did land some ground and pound while Figueiredo did not so point goes to Petr.

Yan back out to the center and deploys a stomp to the leg that looks uncomfortable. The Jon Jones oblique kick. Figueiredo pushes him back though and Yan consents but lands another one. And another one. Now Yan throws a mean body kick that Figueiredo tries to turn into a takedown attempt but no joy.

Yan pressing Figueiredo back now and he’s putting strikes together now. Head kick gets blocked. Figueiredo lands his own body kick. Yan attempts his patented step in trip but Figueiredo is wise to it.

Figueiredo lunges in and misses and Yan tries to hit a left but Figueiredo moves away. Oo, nice hook lands for Figueiredo that backs Yan up. Yan’s volume not nearly as high as usual, possibly because he’s felt Figueiredo’s power.

Really Yan is not throwing much at all right now. Weird to see him this hesitant. He must’ve been hurt by that shot. And Figueiredo tries to drive in for the hips but Yan spins him away.

Exchange of kicks and then Figueiredo lands a nice uppercut as Yan covers up. Yan retusn one of his own a moment later. Figueiredo looks very confortable in there right now and lands a right hand. Short time and Yan comes with offense of his own and then hits his stepping trip but it’s a little too late.

Round 3

Start of that round looked like Yan was pulling away but I think that right hand changed things dramatically and Figueiredo scrapped his way back into things.

Both men in the center to start this one and Yan goes low and high with kicks. Figueiredo steps in with a hook to the body. He’s done that a couple times and he’s now the advancing party while Yan is starting to switch stances.

Ooo and Figueiredo hits a nice feint into a double that catches Yan off guard and scores the takedown. Yan immediately uses a butterfly to scramble to the feet though.

OH! Figueiredo ducks for a double and Yan times a beautiful uppercut! Sat Figueiredo down on his ass and Yan pounces! Figueiredo tying up and trying to buy a breath but Yan is getting after him! Figueiredo does a good job moving and tying up and then gets to his feet and Figueiredo seems OK now. Biggest moment of the fight for sure.

And Yan trying to build off this with pressure. Figueiredo swing a big looping overhand that misses by a mile. Yan advancing and switching stances. Figueiredo breathing a little heavy in there now.

Nice body kick lands from Figueiredo. Yan slips a 1-2 then lands his own body kick and a snappy jab. Yan really putting Figueiredo against the fence now. And then when Figueiredo gets him to back into space Yan lumps him with a left hook.

Figueiredo trying to stay in the center now but Yan is starting to feel it. Big uppercut lands! And a pair of hooks. Figueiredo wearing it a bit now as Yan lands a mean combo. Jump knee from Yan just misses and he’s feeling himself right now as the round ends.

Round 4

Best round of the fight by far and clear Yan round. Figgy might need a finish already depending on how you score the second round.

But Figueiredo looks better to start. Certainly less worn than he was. But then he does a weird spin and Yan puts him on the mat for a moment. Figueiredo scrambles back up without anything major happening.

Good body kick from Figueiredo but he’s still getting backed up. He grabs a snatch single but he doesn’t have the same explosion on his finishes and Yan defends. Figueiredo still holding that leg as he pushes Yan to the fence. Nothing much happening here as they fight this position.

They break position and in space Yan knocks Figueiredo’s mouthpiece out with another uppercut. That is the money punch for Yan and he’s landing it constantly now.

Figueiredo just behind all the time now. Yan with more output, more angles, and seeing things very well. Figueiredo running out of ideas and gets swatted with another uppercut that snaps his head back.

Figueiredo trying to get inside and lands a body shot but he needs more. Yan steadily working now. Both men fighting in the center and Figueiredo lands a nice body shot.

Collision and a clinch but quick break. Yan controlling the space well and lands a left hook then a jumping knee. Another big uppercut. That thing is working Figueiredo over.

WHOA! Figueiredo drops Yan! Not sure if he was off balance but a straight shot from Figgy say Yan on his ass! Figueiredo jumps on him but Yan pops right back up and seems to be OK. Both men slugging it out for the final few seconds. Was that enough to steal back a round he was clearly losing?

Round 5

This could be anywhere from 2-2 to 4-0 Yan. Gave the last round to Yan because the drop seemed less damage and more balance but easily could be a Figueiredo round.

Both corners agree saying they need to win this round and Yan comes out with some fire. In-fighting and Yan sits down on some big combinations early, tagging Figueiredo.

But every time Yan gets ahead, Figueiredo battles back. Nice body shot and hook from the former flyweight champion. Ebbs and flows.

Uppercut from Yan inside then he changes levels but no joy. Back to the phone booth fighting. Now Figueiredo pressing forward as Yan keeps putting bone down range.

In-fighting and Yan spins and Figueiredo just eats it. Clean spinning elbow and Figueiredo taps his own head laughing it off. This is the most technical dogfight you’ll ever see.

More inside work and Figueiredo lands a good knee but eats a big right hand. Yan’s boxing inside has been on point. Jumping switch kick from Yan gets blocked. Figueiredo goes for a question mark kick. We’re seeing the full bag out here.

Figueiredo with a pair of big right hands that backs Yan up. Figueiredo trying to turn on the gas. Yan shoots and Figueiredo almost jumps over him accidentally. Back to the shootout. Nasty work in close space from Yan. And more. Big combinations as he just outworks Figueiredo down the stretch her.

Final 10 seconds and Yan shoots, Figueiredo defends, right hand.

Truly sensational fight. One of the best of the year.

Official Decision

Petr Yan def. Deiveson Figueiredo via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

Post Fight

Yan is happy to get the win particularly given his struggles with the judges lately. He has his son in the cage with him who gets the mic to say he’s happy his dad won.

Yan then says Merab told Deiveson Figueiredo he deserved a title fight, then calls out Merab for a rematch, saying he just beat Figueiredo.

Post Fight 2

Figueiredo also gets a post-fight interview and starts with “God damn, what a fight!” Figueiredo then gives Yan props saying tonight it was his night and that he’ll be back stronger.
