‘Cool Hand’, 29, then crashed out 10-4 in Dortmund and was clearly frustrated with conditions.

ITV4 commentator Stuart Pyke admitted: “If he’s convinced there’s a breeze, he’s talking himself out of it.

“Odds on tournament favourite he maybe. But Luke Humphries as you can see is far from happy with the conditions, claiming that there’s a breeze on stage. But it’s not a problem for Jermaine Wattimena.”

After his defeat Humphries took to X where he once again complained of the wind, but held his hands up and praised his opponent for dealing with it better than he did.

Humphries tweeted: “It was incredibly tough circumstances on the stage today but I have to say Jermaine handled it so well and played amazing! all credit to you mate!

“Fantastic game good luck to all the remaining players left in the tournament. It should be an exciting night ”

The World No1 was the second top star in less than a day to exit the tournament in frustration. Michael van Gerwen slammed Professional Darts Corporation bosses about the breeze after his heavy defeat to Gary Anderson.

Talking to Viaplay, Van Gerwen blasted: “There is a lot of wind on the stage. And they just don’t learn, they just don’t learn. While yesterday and the day before yesterday there was nothing wrong.

“They keep making the same mistakes, They want to make a nice tournament here and that’s what it should be.

“Of course you can also beat yourself over the head if you didn’t play well enough.

“But at some point it gets into your head and it’s hard to deal with that. Any darts expert can see how my darts are laying. And then they say all the doors were closed.

“Well, they can kiss my bum, none of that is true. And then that creates irritation. Then they say you must be pro enough to deal with that. But I have my limits. The PDC may scratch themselves behind the ears, because this is not the first time.”

In another shock, Anderson was smashed out of the tournament in the quarters 10-5 by Ritchie Edhouse.
