CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN could be heading back to Ajax at the end of this season, Sun Online has learned.

The Danish midfielder’s contract is up in June, and Old Trafford chiefs are not expected to offer the 32-year-old a new deal.

But the former Spurs, Inter and Brentford star is in high demand – and his former club Ajax lead the way in trying to sign him.

The Dutch giants are monitoring his situation and could be prepared to offer Eriksen a three-year deal which would pave the way for him to end his career back at Ajax.

They are trying to tie up a deal which would see Eriksen agree to a move in the New Year but remain at Old Trafford to see out the remainder of his contract.

Yet while Ajax step up their bid, clubs in America and Saudi Arabia are also keen.

But Eriksen is believed to be attracted by the idea of a fairytale return to a club where he really made his name.

Last month Eriksen said he felt settled on and off the field at Manchester United but admitted he’d have to wait to see what his long-term future holds following a summer of speculation.

Eriksen said: “I feel very good being at United. If they told me to leave I would leave but I didn’t hear that.

“I’m also a guy who likes being in a place where my family is settled and at the same time being in a place where I can benefit and play, that’s always going to be my aim.”

Asked about his long-term future with his contract expiring next summer, the midfielder said: “There’s one year left so my focus is going to be on this year, going full out and see what happens afterwards.”

“It’s difficult to ask the manager in the off-season how many minutes I’m going to get in a season.

Eriksen's Man United stats

Here is a look at Christien Eriksen's career at Man United...

Games: 80

Goals: 6

Assists: 16

Yellow Cards: 6

Red Card: 0

Minutes Played: 5,030

Honours: FA Cup x1

“If he starts promising minutes to players we’re going to have a long season!

“There was no speaking in that sense, just head down, work hard and focus on each game.”

Former Man United star Roy Keane recently labelled Eriksen “a fool” for his comments after the draw to FC Twente.

The midfielder claimed that the Dutch outfit wanted the result more than the Red Devils, a notion that upset Keane.

Eriksen was one of Erik ten Hag’s first signings after taking charge in 2022, the 32-year-old midfielder’s role became somewhat diminished last term and talk turned to a potential exit.

Former club Ajax and Belgian side Anderlecht were linked with a summer move for Eriksen.

The Denmark international made his first start of the season in United’s 3-0 win at Southampton, which he followed up three days later with a brace in the 7-0 Carabao Cup shellacking of Barnsley.

But he’s had a marginal impact since then as the team has struggled.
