NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Packers can contend with Jordan Love as long as they can live with his mistakes

0

I’ve gotta be candid about the new-look Green Bay Packers. While I never thought little of them, I did think there seemed to be a way-too-early anointing consensus around Jordan Love’s ascendance from good to great. Love had played one above-average half of a season — last year in 2023 — and it felt as if everyone was ready to give him a golden crown as the next special Packers quarterback.

For my taste, it was overzealous and premature.

After a few games in 2024, I’m starting to warm to the idea that Love could quarterback a Packers contender. I’ve seen enough flashes of him creating and threading the ball into tight spaces — like this dime to Jayden Reed — that only a handful of other starters would even consider, let alone attempt. Love is remarkable in this regard.

However, we have enough of a sample size of Love to understand is prone to some absolutely boneheaded decisions. I’m not even talking about having too much confidence in his arm.

I mean in the sense of not letting a dead play lie to rest.

There’s a reason Love has a staggering 4.4 interception percentage so far in 2024.

Just over a month into the 2024 season, the Packers stand at a solid 3-2 in the loaded NFC North — where everyone has at least three wins so far. Love has shown enough to help the Packers overcome an intimidating divisional gauntlet and perhaps take them on a deep playoff run, too. They just better hope he doesn’t get overconfident (or clumsy?) at the worst possible time, perhaps with their season on the line in the near future.

Because a machine-like quarterback of efficiency, he is not.

Love’s Packers remain steady in For The Win’s Week 6 NFL Power Rankings. They, and all their NFC North counterparts, are starting to show some real mettle. Let’s see where that impressive division and a host of other contenders stand as we move into October in earnest.
