Galamsey exacerbates poverty — UN backs Ghanaians’ campaign against illegal mining

The United Nations has voiced its strong support for the ongoing campaign by the Ghanaians and civil society to curb illegal small-scale mining, known locally as galamsey. Galamsey activities are largely unregulated and use highly destructive practices like the use of mercury and excavators to dig for gold.
