On social media, he wrote: “Dear all, in particular my fans, I feel that your loyalty deserves an explanation for my absence from tournaments.

“After 20+ years I feel I need a break from the professional circuit for now. Massive thanks for the support from my fans & sponsors. Also I’d like to thank @OfficialPDC @PDPA–darts for the opportunity and last but not least my family. Cheers folks Ade.”

One year on, he is now planning a return to the oche.

Lewis is set to compete in the Modus Super Series, a weekly darts competition that features top players from Britain and across the world.

A social media post from Modus read: “Jackpot is coming… Keep your eyes peeled!”

Discussing his return, the 39-year-old said: “I’m delighted to be returning to the sport that I love, and to be backed by Modus Sports Management going forward. I feel refreshed and re-energised, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me.”

Lewis also confirmed that he would be making a gradual comeback, adding: “I will not be rushing back to Q-School just yet, but I am not ruling it out in the future.

“Firstly I shall be looking to play the Modus Super Series in 2025 as my pathway back to the Professional circuit.”
