Rugby tragedy as star, 24, dies after freak tackle crushed chest and caused devastating injuries as chief pays tribute

RUGBY player Ashwill Sauls has died aged 24 after a freak tackle during a game left him with devastating lung injuries.

Full-back Sauls, who played for Robertson Rangers near Cape Town, fell heavily during a match against Montagu on Saturday.

Sauls was subsequently rushed to hospital with multiple broken ribs but was tragically declared dead on arrival with a severely punctured lung.

Boland Rugby Union president Bennie van Rooi told local media: “It’s a sad day for the deceased’s family, as well as for the region’s wider rugby community.”

While South African Rugby president Mark Alexander added: “It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of Ashwill Sauls, a dedicated and talented rugby player from the Robertson Rangers.

“Ashwill’s untimely death following a fatal tackle during a friendly match against Montagu RFC has left the entire rugby community in shock and mourning.

“At just 24-years-old, Ashwill had been a vital part of the Rangers for the past five years, showcasing not only his skill on the field but also his sportsmanship and passion for the game.

“His loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, and all who knew him.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ashwill’s family, friends, and the Robertson Rangers during this incredibly difficult time.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences and support to everyone affected by this tragedy.

“May Ashwill’s memory inspire us all to cherish every moment and play the game with the same spirit and dedication that he did.

“Rest in peace, Ashwill Sauls. You will be dearly missed.”

Sauls was a popular figure within his club, having played for the Rangers for the last five years.

He had also developed a sizeable fanbase on social media, with 18,000 followers on TikTok.
