Cam Smith’s Record-Breaking Streak Leads to Promotion

0

Forget about Aaron Judge hitting home runs at that Mickey Mouse ballpark in the Bronx, Chicago Cubs prospect Cam Smith hit a home run in six straight games inside one of the hardest ballparks to hit one out in all the minor leagues.

The 2024 first round pick was already on his way to the next level in the Cubs farm system, but Smith’s rampage with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans wasn’t over on Sunday, when he capped off his time at Single-A by adding to his record-breaking home run streak. Six games, six home runs. Cam Smith is the definition of on fire.

The strong third baseman took a bit of time to adjust to pro ball as Smith only had two hits in his first six games with Myrtle Beach after signing with the Cubs. Since then? Wow. The right-handed hitter ended his stint in low A-Ball going 15-for-47 at the plate and during the six-game home run streak Smith was 11-for-21, while drawing four walks and only striking out twice.

This is what makes this streak from Smith even more incredible. To cut down on travel in the minor leagues, teams play long series against each other, which meant that this week the Pelicans were on the road against the Charleston RiverDogs. The Tampa Bay Rays Single-A affiliate plays in Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in South Carolina.

Must be a pretty hitter-friendly park and that’s why Smith put up video game numbers there, right? Nope.

Now, Smith is off to the next step in his baseball journey. The Cubs most likely already had Smith’s promotion in mind during the middle of his six-game home run streak, but the team made it official following Sunday’s game.

After 14 games with Myrtle Beach, Smith is headed to Advanced A-Ball and will join the South Bend Cubs on Tuesday.

The South Bend Cubs will host Great Lakes at Four Winds Field Tuesday night.
