Fight Night Program – Week of Aug. 22-28

0

The weekend is approaching, and from Friday to Sunday it will be “fight-o-clock” somewhere in the world. Every Thursday, The Ring will bring you the most up-to-date information on the most relevant fights you need to see in this week-at-a-glance, one-stop enhanced fight schedule. A quick checklist for the cognoscenti, a useful nuts-and-bolts guide for the boxing neophyte is what we’re aiming at.

Here are this week’s most relevant fights:

Saturday, August 24 – Arena Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico City

Floyd Mayweather vs. John Gotti III – 8 rounds

It’s bad enough to be forced to acknowledge this as a proper boxing card, even for the sake of all the talented fighters who will be appearing in the undercard. It’s even worse to know that we’re going to be stuck trying to explain this dumpster fire to casual boxing fans who think this is a proper boxing match. The “no weight limit” label on this cute little scam of a fight should be a warning shot to anyone with a basic knowledge of the sport. The “exhibition” part will leave people wondering what was exactly being exhibited. And the “rematch” bit should in fact be a “rubber match” label, since these two had a shameful boxing fight the first time around followed by an instant reprise after the final bell that was just as action-packed as the fight itself, and just as horrible as well.

What to expect in this fight: Some will see a nice opportunity to see a boxing circus act, I see an opportunity to watch a great undercard and then go to sleep a bit earlier than usual.
