Paris train station EVACUATED over ‘bomb threat’ minutes after ‘security fears’ shuts airport amid Olympic chaos
A MAJOR Paris train station has reportedly been evacuated over a bomb threat just minutes after a French airport was shut down over security concerns.
Gare Du Nord was evacuated amid a bomb scare with the entire perimeter of the station said to be cordoned off.
Anarchy has hit the French train system just hours before the opening ceremony[/caption]Local journalist Jean-Baptiste Marty said “two suspicious packages” were located at the rail hub.
Writing on X, the reporter added: “A bomb threat is in progress at Gare du Nord in Paris.
“The entire perimeter around the station and within the station is cordoned off.”
French media outlet Actu17 reported two threatening calls were made warning of two bombs present at the station.
Elsewhere Basel-Mulhouse airport, near the Swiss border, was also rocked by a bomb scare forcing travellers to be evacuated.
On its website, Basel-Mulhouse EuroAirport initially said: “For safety reasons, the terminal had to be evacuated and is currently closed.”
But now the airport has reopened and flights are slowly set to resume.
It came only hours after the French rail network was hit with major delays following a coordinated arson attack.
High speed rail services were cancelled with crowds building up at major train station across Paris.
According to French reports, the arson strikes on rail lines were “coordinated” and “studied” in a “sabotage” attack.
Eurostar services between London and Paris were also cancelled with Brits warned to avoid travel.
The chaos has come with the Opening Ceremony only hours away.
Travellers at Basel-Mulhouse could breathe a sigh of relief, with a new statement saying: “The airport has reopened and flight operations are gradually restarting.
“Passengers are requested to contact their airline for information about their flight.”
French police confirmed a bomb scare was behind the evacuation, according to news agency Reuters.
Air France also said its flights were grounded due to the threat.
A passenger, replying to a post from a Turkish airline, said on X: “We were supposed to board one of your flights at 12 o’clock at Basel EuroAirport but the airport has just been evacuated due to a possible bomb threat.
“This is flight “VF106”. What should we do please?”
Pictures circulating on social media show travellers waiting outside the airport with their luggage.
A major security operation has been launched across Paris with an army of 45,000 cops and 18,000 soldiers patrolling the streets.
It’s the biggest French deployment of troops since the Second World War.
They are supported by cops from numerous countries, as well as drones and AI surveillance.
France was on high alert well before the Olympics, with tensions boiling following the election.
