Emma Raducanu set for massive financial hit after Wimbledon exit to qualifier despite earning £226k prize money

EMMA RADUCANU is set to take a financial hit on her Wimbledon prize money.

The British star, 21, earned £226,000 for reaching the fourth round in SW19.

Raducanu would have netted £375k for advancing to the quarter-finals.

But she fell to impressive qualifier Lulu Sun on Centre Court, losing 6-2 5-7 6-2.

Chatting to OLBG, financial expert Rob Wilson explained the tax implications of Raducanu’s run.

He said: “Emma Raducanu, like most athletes who earn any kind of real money, will be set up as a company for the purposes of taxation and earning profits etc.

“She’ll pay, on the basis that she’s based in the UK, 20 per cent corporation tax up to a certain level and then 25 per cent as soon as those profits go above the next tax threshold.

“So if she were to earn, say, £10million she would be expected to be taxed by around £2.5m, and then there will be deductible expenses through a company to try and bring that tax bill down, which are all legitimate.

“But she will have a significant tax bill based upon her Wimbledon earnings which are as of yet to be confirmed.

“Realistically, 20 per cent corporation tax on top of those earnings.”

So far in her career, Raducanu has earned $4,067,065 (£3.2m) in prize money from her on-court exploits.

She also has an impressive portfolio of brand partners, including Porsche and Dior.

Raducanu enjoyed a resurgent grass court season following her decision to skip Roland Garros.

After reaching the semi-finals in Nottingham and quarters in Eastbourne – Raducanu defeated Renata Zarazua, Elise Mertens and Maria Sakkari to reach the Wimbledon fourth round.

Her victory over Sakkari was just the second top 10 win of her career, with the first coming the week before against Jessica Pegula in Eastbourne.

Raducanu had been due to play mixed doubles with Andy Murray, in what would have been his final Wimbledon event.

But she controversially pulled out on the morning of their first round match citing “wrist stiffness” – denying Murray a last Wimbledon farewell in the process.

Judy Murray labelled the decision “astonishing” on social media.

But Raducanu later defended her “no-brainer” decision.

She said: “I think going into the tournament, I wasn’t expecting to make fourth round. So for me it was a no-brainer. I would have loved to have played.

He didn’t ask me, If you’re still in the singles, are you going to play? That was never a question to be answered.

“Given how I woke up yesterday morning, it was for me a no-brainer.”
