Birmingham-Southern baseball advances to D-III College World Series as the college is about to close

0

Birmingham-Southern’s baseball team reached the D-III College World Series on Saturday after topping Denison in the Super Regional round, which is a very impressive feat.

What’s even more impressive about it is that the school represented on the baseball diamond will cease to exist after May 31.

The private university announced in March that it will close at the end of the month because of financial hardships after 168 years of operation. That means this will be the last Birmingham-Southern baseball team to compete.

The tournament starts on May 31 in Eastlake, Ohio, which is coincidentally the day the university closes its doors. The further the Panthers advance, the further they’ll carry on some of the last remnants of their college.

NBC Nightly News with Lester Hold did a story this past week on the school ahead of Saturday’s game.

We’ll know soon enough what Birmingham-Southern’s journey looks like in the D-III College World Series, as they’ll be playing for pride and legacy without a school to return to once the postseason run ends.
