Epsom Derby odds chaos with new joint-favourite after Charlie Appleby suffers latest crushing blow
THE Epsom Derby market has undergone another massive change after Charlie Appleby suffered another crushing blow.
And it means a horse who is unlikely to even run has been made the new joint-favourite with one bookie.
Godolphin’s Arabian Crown has picked up an injury and will miss the world’s most famous Flat race on June 1.
It’s the second bit of heartbreaking news for trainer Appleby in as many weeks after Hidden Law sadly broke down after winning the Chester Vase.
A Godolphin statement read: “Unfortunately Arabian Crown will miss the @EpsomRacecourseDerby due to a set back.
“He will now be aimed at a late summer campaign.”
Arabian Crown had been second-fav for the feature behind Aidan O’Brien’s much-hyped City Of Troy.
The markets took another volatile turn on Thursday when William Haggas’ Economics bolted up in the Dante – the key trial for the Derby.
But having been taken out of the Epsom showpiece just last week, it will now cost Economics’ owners £75,000 to supplement him for the race.
William Hill are taking no chances though and have made him 7-4 joint-fav with 2000 Guineas flop City Of Troy.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Economics was a brilliant winner of the Dante on Thursday under Tom Marquand.
“William Haggas hasn’t yet decided if he’ll head to Epsom, but we were suitably impressed by his performance and entered him into the market at 7-4, with a run.
“It’s disappointing to hear that leading contender Arabian Crown has picked up an injury and will miss the race.
“His absence means we’ve shortened City Of Troy into 7-4, alongside Economics, as the Ballydoyle star looks to bounce back from his blow-out in the 2000 Guineas.”
While Betfair made Economics 5-2 with a run behind 2-1 City Of Troy.
Barry Orr said: “Arabian Crown’s withdrawal is another blow to Godolphin and their Derby aspirations.
“With another challenger falling by the wayside, our Sportsbook have introduced Economics into the Derby ante-post betting at 5/2 ‘with a run’.
“So his ante-post supporters won’t be out of pocket if he fails to show up at Epsom.”
