Timekeeper has license revoked for Macado vs Duman-ag fight
Back on May 1st we saw a huge controversy in the Philippines as Ramil Macado (8-1, 4) was knocked out in the opening round by Lorenz Dumam-ag (10-0-1, 7), with Dunam-ag claiming the WBO Oriental Flyweight title with the win.
On paper that wouldn’t be much of a story, though it’s how that knockout came about that saw much attention, with the opening round lasting close to 4 minutes, and in the additional time Macado was dropped twice.
The first 2 minutes 48 seconds was exciting, but relatively known as the two men set a high tempo from off with Macado being dropped late in what should have been the round. He recovered to his feet, and it was fair to assume the bell would be forthcoming. Instead however the time keeper was busy, not with watching the clock but instead taking photos, acting as an unofficial photographer, or a fan, rather than a paid official of the event.
By ignoring the clock, and the 3 minute mark, the time keeper allowed the round to continue and Macado was dropped again after 3 minutes was up. And then again later on, as the clock kept ticking, but the bell failed to ring. Eventually the round was over, not because of the time keeper, but because Macado was in no fit state to continue, he was flat on his back following a brutal left hand that had removed him from his senses. The knockout was 3:57 into the round, into a round that should have ended at 3:00.
Over the past few days the GAB have announced that the time keeper, Jordan Dopalco, has been investigated and had his license revoked following that investigation. Stating that Dopalco was “administratively liable for gross negligence and conduct unbecoming of a professional timekeeper". The report by the GAB also stated that Dopalco has shown “utter lack of care to the boxers’ welfare and integrity of the sport as evidenced by his insensitive act and wanton disregard for the lives of the boxers when he crassly took pictures/videos of Macado’s knockdowns not only once but thrice.”
Adding he had “lied about the official time when he declared the official time of stoppage at 2:57 when he knew for a fact that the round went longer than the mandated time.” It added that “Dopalco’s unprofessional acts not only affected the record of the boxers and ultimately, the outcome of the fight but also definitely endangered the health and safety and even the life of Macado as he was pummeled by Dumam-ag for almost an extra minute which led to Macado being downed for the second and third time, forcing Tapdasan to stop the fight”.
The GAB, who are responsible for boxing in the Philippines, have sent the bout to the WBO to review, regarding the result, given their regional title was on the line, and whilst the bout could be reverted to a no contest, this is pretty unlikely given the past history of time keeper errors. We’ve seen them happen rarely but they do happen, famously the UK boxing scene was in uproar when the opening round was cut short between Shane McPhilbin and Enzo Maccarinelli, whilst the time keeper made a multitude of errors in the sensational Keita Kurihara Vs Yuki Strong Kobayashi bout in 2019, there was also a long round in the clash between Badou Jack and Richard Rivera and there was also an error in the Gennadiy Golovkin Vs Daniel Geale bout. None of those had results overturned, though officials in a number of those were subsequently punished.
