Nishida takes part in post win press conference, plans to enjoy food and travel

Yesterday we saw  Ryosuke Nishida (9-0, 1) [西田凌佑] score the biggest win of his career, as he dethroned Puerto Rican Emmanuel Rodriguez (22-3, 13) and claimed the IBF Bantamweight crown. Today, following that bout, he took part in a press conference to speak about the result, and his plans, or lack of plans, for the future.

Nishida, who attended the event looking swollen around the right side of his face and wearing sunglasses which hide what was a very badly swollen right eye, stated “I am filled with happiness and gratitude to everyone who supported me, Chairman Edagawa, and trainer Kosuke Takeichi”.

After the bout it was revealed that he had had a victory party with Mr Edagawa and members from the Muto Gym, before returning home to spend time with his wife and eldest daughter, who was born in late March, and kept Nishida up until 5am this morning.

Takeichi explained that his charge “...had courage and guts. He stepped forward without fear against the champion, didn't give in, and broke his opponent's heart.” Whilst Edagawa stated “Just like the gym's first world champion, Nobuo Nashiro, he showed a strong will”, referencing Nobuo Nashiro who won the WBA Super Flyweight title in his 8th professional bout.

Edagawa also explained that Nishida struggled to make weight “The weight loss was difficult and I was nervous that I would be overweight. I weighed over 500 grams (1lb) the day before. Nishida slept a lot, even though he normally wouldn't sleep”, it was revealed that in total he'd reduced his weight by 11.5KG's (25.3lbs) coming from 65KG (143.3lbs) to 53.5KG's (118lbs).

The immediate plan for Nishida seems to be enjoying food, stating “I want to enjoy the fried foods, cup ramen, potato chips, and juice that I've been avoiding until now”. Adding “I've been thinking about Rodriguez all the time, so for now I want to forget about boxing”, and revealing “Since I haven't had a honeymoon, I would like to travel to Korea or Kyushu”.

Interestingly whilst he isn’t looking to return to the ring for a while, and will be taking more than typical week long break from training that usually takes, he will be watching the big Tokyo Dome show tomorrow, which features two of the other Bantamweight champions in action. That includes WBA Bantamweight champion Takuma Inoue (19-1, 5) [井上拓真] who defends his title against Sho Ishida (34-3, 17) [石田匠]. Nishida stated "I've sparred with Ishida-san, and I know how strong he is. I look forward to seeing him win tomorrow”.
