Luis Nery takes part in media work out
On May 6th attention turns to the Tokyo Dome, where we’ll see Mexican puncher Luis Nery (35-1, 27) try to dethrone Undisputed Super Bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue (26-0, 23) [井上尚弥], in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year.
Today, ahead of that bout, Nery took part in his public work out and a press conference at the Teiken Gym, where he seemed supremely confident, not just in his own ability, but also in what he and his team had seen of Inoue, and his chances of scoring a major upset.
The event, which had around 70 members of the press, saw the Teiken Gym in Tokyo being packed, so much so that there weren't enough slippers for the media in attendance.
Nery seemed really happy to be in Japan, explaining “I've always loved Tokyo. It's quiet and comfortable. It was cold last time (referring to his second fight against Shinsuke Yamanaka in March 2018), but this time it's warm, so it's good for losing weight. It's 10, 20 times better than past games”. Regarding his weight Nery was reportedly 127lbs today, and needs to lose just 5lbs come the weigh in on May 5th.
As for facing Inoue, it was revealed that Nery had wished to face the Monster back in the World Boxing Super Series, stating “I wanted to appear in the WBSS, but I couldn't. I've been waiting for four years.”
In regards to Inoue Nery stated “I think he's a great boxer,'' though he was asked about his comments to foreign media, that saw him describe Inoue as “an average boxer”. He tried to clarify, explaining “I think so. He's overrated.'' And adding “He's not like the Michael Jordan of basketball,”. He used Inoue’s win over the then unified champion Marlon Tapales, to back up his case, stating “the fact that he fought (Marlon) Tapares to 10 rounds” as a reason for why Inoue is overrated.
Nery’s trainer, Zamir Lozano one of many of Nery’s team at the event, stated that he had been scouting Inoue and when asked about his weaknesses "I've found a few. I've been studying them. It's not just defense, there are a few other things.” and it was also revealed that Nery’s team had been speaking to a former Inoue sparring partner, who had been giving information about Inoue.
Regarding the actual bout Nery added “I think it's going to be a very tough match, both for me and for Inoue. We both have a chance to win, but I'm Mexican, and I'm ready to give my all in the ring and die in the ring”.
As for the work out, which was watched by Inoue’s father and trainer, Shingo Inoue, Nery did a round of shadow boxing and a round of mitt work. He looked powerful, though a little wild, and didn’t seem to watch to give much away for the Inoue camp to use.
