The Nintendo 64 has a complicated legacy for Nintendo.

With 33 million in sales, the N64 failed to surpass the mega-successful Super Nintendo, and was dwarfed in sales worldwide by Sony’s PlayStation. The reliance on cartridges rather than adopting the CD format led to a lack of third-party developer support and a small game library – but some of the games we did get for the system, first released in North America on September 29th, 1996, remain all-time classics.

The N64 gave us the start of several huge Nintendo franchises, from Mario Party to Super Smash Bros. Two iconic Legend of Zelda games released on the N64 that many fans still consider the best in the series. And the N64 produced one of the greatest launch games of all time, Super Mario 64.
