Round ups- Cambodian boxing Commission recognised, Hiruta training in the US, Akui honored, tournament quarter finals announced!
Over the last few days we’ve seen a lot of small stories break, that aren’t big enough for a major article, but are worth sharing.
One of the most interesting was regarding the recent show in Cambodia, that saw several notable Japanese officials over there, including Tsuyoshi Yasukochi and referee Koji Tanaka, working the show. Following the event the JBC confirmed that they were recognising the CPBC (Cambodian Professional Boxing Commission), and that Cambodia fighters with a CPBC license would be allowed to compete in Japanese rings under the auspices of the JBC.
It was reported that WBO female Super Flyweight champion Mizuka Hiruta (6-0, 2) [晝田瑞希] was over in the US, for her third training came with Manny Robles, and Team Robles, and she'll be in the US for a month whilst preparing for her third world title defense. The talented Hiruta explained that she was in the US to find what she was lacking in Japan, in terms of development, and that she would like a big fight, potentially in the US. It's worth noting the US does have some top female fighters in, and around, Super Flyweight so Hiruta is likely using the time in the US not just to train, but also put feelers out about facing some of the top American female fighters.
WBA Flyweight champion Seigo Yuri Akui (19-2-1, 11) [阿久井政悟], the first world champion from a gym in Okayama prefecture, was honored at an event in Kurashiki City on Wednesday, which saw him being presented with "Kurashiki City Sports Medal of Honor". Akui's promoter, Tatsuya Moriyasu, was also honored at the event, receiving the "Kurashiki City Sports Medal". The champion is set to do a number of events before the end of the month, before returning to full training for his first defense, which is scheduled for May 6th at the Tokyo Dome against Taku Kuwahara (13-1, 8) [桑原拓].
We also got details regarding the "Asia's strongest lightweight tournament", which we now know will begin on April 25th with what are essentially quarter final bouts, set to be held at Korakuen Hall. The quarter finals will see Yoji Saito (6-3-2, 6) [齊藤陽ニ] take on Shinnosuke Saito (12-5, 3) [齋藤眞之助], and Taiga Imanaga (4-0, 3) [今永虎雅] battle with Chinese fighter Qiang Ma (6-3-2, 4) [马强]. The winners will then clash with yet to be announced Asian ranked fighters in the semi finals, which are set for July 18th, and the winners will face in the final on November 25th. The tournament has a prize of 5,000,000 Yen, with prizes for scoring KO's, as well as winning the overall tournament.
