Dawn Staley called out CBS Sports for airing an extremely offensive comment about Kamilla Cardoso
If there’s one thing Dawn Staley will always do, it’s protect her players. Every single time.
She’s been especially protective of Kamilla Cardoso this week after the South Carolina center caused a bench-clearing scuffle against LSU. Obviously, you never want to see that. But, as Staley said, it was just a hyper-competitive moment that kind of went wrong.
She apologized for Cardoso and everyone else who participated in that moment. That’s what a good coach who cares about her players and the state of the game does.

Unfortunately, though, Staley had to spring into action again for Cardoso today after a CBS Sports radio host stepped completely out of line during the “CBS Sports Minute.”
He called Cardoso the “giant Brazilian woman who knocks people over” during the clip. And, honestly, it’s shocking something like that was even allowed to air.
This was the CBS Sports Minute where Kamilla Cardoso is called the "giant Brazilian woman that knocks people over." Crazy that this even made it to the air. pic.twitter.com/hlZis8pLg2

Staley heard that and immediately called out CBS for it. She rightfully demanded an apology for what was said.
What a morning?!! Never thought I’d hear one of my players described in such an offensive way. I’m not sitting this one out. Kamilla deserves an apology @CBSSports @1075thegame (can be issued even though it’s out of your control)

The 107.5 radio station in South Carolina is a CBS affiliate, so it doesn’t have complete control over what gets syndicated on its airwaves. Nonetheless, the station itself did apologize for what was aired.
(2/2) Even though it was not one of our voices that said this, we are ultimately responsible for what plays on our airways and we will work to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again. We sincerely apologize to you, Kamilla and your entire team.

It’s a shame this happened, but it’s not shocking. The comments made on the broadcast are similar to the comments Kim Mulkey made about Cardoso after the game, subtly calling her out for her height. It’s not as blatant, sure, but it’s the same thing.
Cardoso deserves so much better. Fans and colleagues rightfully backed Staley up on this one.

Love Coach Staley for calling out the CBS Sports podcast this morning that called Kamilla “the giant Brazilian woman from SC that knocks people over.” They issued a swift apology – as they should. Thankful these women have a great coach who goes to bat for them! https://t.co/sWHxm8lFl7
