Apparently, Luke Getsy Wasn’t A Big Justin Fields Fan After All

0

Luke Getsy spent two years in Chicago talking up Justin Fields as a quarterback. That continued even after he was hired as the Las Vegas Raiders’ new offensive coordinator. He had nothing but good things to say. One would think this means he might be open to the idea of a reunion between the two in the desert. There have been whispers for months that Las Vegas might have an eye on trading for Fields. Yet many think Fields wouldn’t be wild about that idea after struggling the past two years under Getsy’s watch.

As it turns out, the feeling is mutual. Armando Salguero is a Hall of Fame voter and insider for Outkick. He had an interesting update on the whole Getsy-Fields dynamic.

“They’ll find a placeholder at the position. The rumors of Justin Fields here make sense in that former Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is the Raiders’ new OC. Except, Getsy liked but didn’t love Fields, per sources. You’ll recall Fields was good enough to help get Getsy fired in Chicago. The Raiders have the No. 13 overall selection in the first round. That’s where they want to find their quarterback.”

Such phrasing isn’t hard to decipher. Getsy liked Fields the person and the leader. He wasn’t wild about Fields the quarterback. One has to wonder how the offensive coordinator felt when the Bears chose to pass on taking a quarterback #1 overall last year, choosing to give Fields another season. He probably wishes things had gone differently.

Luke Getsy has an even bigger challenge ahead of him.

While Fields may have been frustrating to coach as a passer, the Raiders have nobody on the roster that even remotely approaches starter territory at quarterback. Worse still, they aren’t a likely destination for top free agents. Couple this with holding the 13th pick in the draft, and they’re in a No-Mans-Land. Unless they can trade up in the draft, a trade for somebody like Fields might be their only viable option. However, if Getsy makes his real feelings known on the subject, one shouldn’t expect it to happen.

The truth is this shouldn’t be surprising. There are many instances of coaches not liking their quarterbacks for various reasons. Sean Payton sent Russell Wilson packing because it was a bad fit. Matt Nagy got fed up with Mitch Trubisky after less than two seasons together. Luke Getsy deserves credit for not airing his grievances in public, unlike Fields, who stated he was being “overcoached” at one point. This serves as another reminder of how difficult finding the right coach-quarterback combination truly is.
