He is survived by his partner Susanne Schaefer and his sons from his marriage to Pilar Martinez.

Brehme was born in Hamburg on November 9, 1960.

He began his professional career with Saarbrücken in 1980 before he moved to Kaiserslautern.

He later joined Bayern Munich for a then record sum of two million Deutsch Marks (roughly £870,000).

After just two years, he left to join Inter Milan.

Brehme was named Italian footballer of the year in 1989 and won the 1991 UEFA Cup.

He then spent a year in Spain at Real Zaragoza and then returned to Kaiserslautern.

Brehme came close to retiring in 1996 but decided to stay on to lead the side to promotion.

The following year, he played a pivotal role in the club’s sensational Bundesliga triumph.

Before his retirement, he won 86 caps for Germany, scoring eight goals, including the one he is best remembered for in the 1990 final.

His partner Susanne confirmed Brehme had passed away on February 20, 2024.

“It is with huge sadness that I can confirm in the name of the family that my partner Andreas Brehme died suddenly and unexpectedly of a cardiac arrest last night.

“We ask at this difficult time to respect our privacy and to refrain from asking questions,” Schaefer said in a statement.

According to reports, Brehme was admitted to Ziemssenstrasse Hospital near his apartment in Munich after suffering a heart attack, but he couldn’t be saved.

His old club Bayern Munich issued a statement after learning of their former midfielder’s passing.

The German champions said: “FC Bayern are extremely saddened by the sudden passing of Andreas Brehme.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

“Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a World Cup winner and, more importantly, as a very special person.

“He will forever be part of the FC Bayern family.

“Rest in peace, Andi!”

Breheme’s passing comes less than two months after the death of his mentor and fellow Germany icon Franz Beckenbauer.

When did Andi Brehme win the World Cup?

Brehme was one of the most highly regarded German footballers in the 1980s and 90s.

He scored in the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup against England, which Germany won on penalties.

He then made history in Rome in 1990 when his penalty won Germany the World Cup against Argentina.

In addition to the World Cup title and the two championships, Brehme also won the DFB Cup with Kaiserslautern as well as the Serie A title and the UEFA Cup with Inter Milan.

Who is Andi Brehme’s wife Pilar?

Pilar was the spouse of Brehme.

She was a former flight attendant and they met each other during the Brehme’s flight from Frankfurt to Miami.

They got married in 1988 and had sons together called Ricardo and Alessio.

However, their marriage didn’t last and they got divorced in 2010.

Not long after the divorce, Brehme began dating Susanne Schaefer, who was working for a fashion company at the time.
