NFL awards bettor comes up agonizingly short on $5 parlay that would have paid $680,000

It was a long road and an unfortunate finish for Martwon Weaver, who placed a $5 five-leg NFL awards-related parlay back in May 2023 at FanDuel Sportsbook. Following his wager throughout the season, at one point late in the year all of the players he had selected were the favorites in their respective categories.

The wager would have won over $680,000.

The five different legs:

  • Lamar Jackson to win MVP at 15-1 odds
  • C.J. Stroud to win Offensive Rookie of the Year at +700
  • Myles Garrett to win Defensive Player of the Year +700
  • Christian McCaffrey to win Offensive Player of the Year 18-1
  • Jalen Carter to win Defensive Rookie of the Year at +600

Weaver put the ticket up on the secondary betting marketplace WagerWire, and received a few offers for the ticker — one as high as $50,000 — but turned them down to let the wager ride.

The WagerWire founders ended up buying 20 percent of the ticket for $25,000 and flying Weaver and his brother out to Vegas to watch the NFL Honors show on Thursday night.

Unfortunately, Houston Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. took home the DROY honor, which means that Weaver’s long-shot parlay didn’t cash.

While he was clearly disappointed, he said on Thursday night that it was “a hell of a ride, that’s the life of a gambler.”

He also noted that he’s looking forward to putting down another long-shot awards bet for next year.
