Report: Michigan Poised to Promote Fast-Rising Assistant to Offensive Coordinator

0

After promoting its offensive coordinator from 2023 to head coach, Michigan is reportedly staying in-house at the offensive coordinator position as well.

The Wolverines will promote quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell to offensive coordinator, according to a Friday morning report from Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. He will replace new coach Sherrone Moore.

Campbell, 37, has served on Michigan's staff since 2022 when he was hired as an offensive analyst. In Jan. 2023, he was promoted to quarterbacks coach to replace Matt Weiss, who was fired amid an investigation by university police into allegations of computer-access crimes.

Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy improved under Campbell, throwing 22 touchdowns against four interceptions in 15 games as Michigan won the national title.

Before joining the Wolverines' staff, Campbell spent time with five schools, including Penn State and Old Dominion. He played collegiately for Division II Mercyhurst from 2004 to ’07.

Michigan, which is facing an uncertain future amid NCAA investigations into allegations of illegal in-person scouting and pandemic-era recruiting, as well as a brutal 2024 schedule, opens its season Aug. 31 against Fresno State.
