If the original Chicago Bears power structure were still in place, it wouldn’t be hard to predict what will happen once the season ends. With Ted Phillips as president, GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus would stay put and they would deliberate what to do with Justin Fields. However, Phillips isn’t in charge anymore. Kevin Warren is the new team president. People have wondered for months how much power he actually wields inside Halas Hall. Many believe he was brought in to help the organization build its new stadium while running the business side of things.

Others feel he might have more sway over the football operations than people think. Insiders view him as a big wild card in this entire process. Rumors have suggested he may wish to change the power structure, bringing in some of his own people. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network shed some light on this during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. He made one thing clear. Warren’s voice would be heard in all major football decisions. His influence will be felt when the time comes to make those big decisions on Eberflus and Fields.

Kevin Warren appears focused on the big picture.

Those will be the questions he asks Poles when the time comes for a sitdown. Is Fields a quarterback that can win them multiple championships? Is Eberflus the head coach who can do the same? These are the exact things he will ask and it will be an honest conversation. Warren had no sign in the acquisition of either man. George McCaskey and Phillips hired Eberflus with a nod from Poles. Fields was drafted by Ryan Pace. If the answer is no to those questions, then changes are coming.

Opportunities were had for Kevin Warren to throw his support behind Eberflus this week. He passed. Maybe that means nothing; maybe it means everything. It is crystal clear he intends to let the season pass and absorb all the available information before making a decision. He cannot afford to let emotion into it. This is way too important. His personal feelings about the two men can’t enter into it. That is how organizations quickly lose their way. It must always be about what is best for the team.
