Thomas Tuchel speaks privately with Djed Spence after Tottenham Hotspur controversy
Thomas Tuchel has revealed what he thought about the controversy surrounding Djed Spence and Thomas Frank at Tottenham, sending a clear message to the England full-back about his behaviour.
Following Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea two weeks ago, a video showed Micky Van de Ven and Spence snubbing Frank and walking straight to the dressing room.
The Spurs head coach’s gesture indicated he was not too pleased with the lack of respect from the two defenders.
However, the Lilywhites have put the incident behind them, with Frank revealing that both Spence and Van de Ven apologised to him unprompted in his office the very next day.
Thomas Tuchel admits he expects better from Tottenham defender Djed Spence
Reports indicate that internally, Tottenham have put Spence’s and Van de Ven’s behaviour down to frustration, and consider it a closed matter.
However, Tuchel has made it clear that he did not like what the England full-back did, admitting that he expects his players to behave a certain way as representatives of the national side.
Tuchel also reportedly spoke to Spence privately about the incident to ‘remind him of the responsibilities of being an England player’.
When asked about Spence walking past Frank, the England boss said (via The Athletic): “I didn’t like it. Because the players know they are not only national players when they are the 10 days in camp, they are always national players, and the standard of behaviour is always important.”
A learning moment for both Spence and Micky van de Ven
Young players do make mistakes, and they deserve second chances, which Frank appears to be more than happy to give them.
In fact, not only have the duo apologised to the Tottenham boss, but Van de Ven has also explained publicly that it was purely down to the frustration of the defeat against Chelsea.
Even if it is the case that the matter was blown out of proportion by the media, it is a lesson that the Spurs duo would have learned about the importance of optics.
