Mauricio Pochettino reveals Premier League return plans after coming so close with Tottenham

0

Tottenham icon Mauricio Pochettino has now hinted at a possible return to the Premier League despite currently managing on the international stage.

Several Tottenham Hotspur fans have a soft spot for Mauricio Pochettino, who spent five years in north London guiding Spurs through some of their most exciting footballing years.

The Argentine knows the Premier League inside out, having managed Southampton, Tottenham, and controversially Chelsea, Spurs’ fiercest rivals.

But no one can dispute the fact that his spell at Tottenham stood out, as he oversaw a period of thrilling attacking football, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen leading the line in what was one of the club’s most entertaining eras.

Mauricio Pochettino opens up on missing Premier League football

The Argentine has since moved into international management and is currently in charge of the United States national team.

With the 2026 World Cup now fast approaching, Pochettino will be hoping to make a statement on the global stage with America.

However, he has now openly admitted that he still misses the thrill of club football and harbours the desire to return to the Premier League.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “The Premier League is the best league in the world. Of course I am missing it. I am so happy in America but also thinking one day to come back to the Premier League. It is the most competitive league.”

He also spoke about his time in north London and how his team came close to winning the Premier League and the Champions League during his time as Spurs boss.

He added: “I think we were so close in Tottenham, we nearly touched it [winning the Champions League and Premier League]. That is a thing that I would want to achieve.”

Could a Tottenham return be on the cards for Mauricio Pochettino?

Pochettino was linked with a return to Tottenham last season when Ange Postecoglou’s side were struggling, but the timing was never right, with the World Cup on the horizon.

The former Tottenham manager, however, never ruled out a reunion, insisting that he still has unfinished business with the club.

Spurs, though, appear to have moved on for now, with Thomas Frank taking charge on a three-year deal, representing the club’s long-term vision under the Dane.

Unless there is a drastic downturn in results under Frank, Pochettino’s fairytale return to north London looks set to wait until long after the 2026 World Cup.
