Thomas Frank made big Cristian Romero claim in his first Tottenham job interview
Thomas Frank was extremely keen on Cristian Romero staying at Tottenham, and the club did one thing to convince the Argentine to commit his long-term future to N17.
Spurs fans were pleasantly surprised when it emerged yesterday that Romero had put pen to paper on a new four-year contract, with the development coming out of nowhere.
However, it was expected in one sense, as the Argentine had been handed the captain’s armband by Thomas Frank. Given how long the Dane deliberated on the decision, it was unlikely he was going to give the captaincy to a player who was not fully committed to the cause.
It has now been revealed just how insistent the new Tottenham boss was about hanging onto the centre-back.
What Tottenham did to convince Cristian Romero to sign a new contract
Last season, Romero publicly criticised the Tottenham hierarchy for not showing ambition.
It has now been revealed by journalist Greame Bailey that the centre-back made it clear he would only sign a new deal if Tottenham showed they meant business with their transfer plans.
Bailey also revealed that Frank made it known early on that he sees the Argentine as the most important player in the Spurs squad.
The journalist told TBR Football: “I am told that during his interview for manager, Thomas Frank made it clear that he saw Romero as a key player. Indeed, he did not believe anyone within the squad was more important than him.
“Whilst he is getting huge money, Romero insisted throughout that he would only sign if Tottenham were making the right noises about their future, and they have clearly done that.”
Romero refers to Spurs as his ‘family’
On signing a new contract, Romero expressed his love for Spurs and the fans, referring to the club as a family.
In an interview with the club’s official channel, Romero has set his sights on winning another trophy this season following Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in May.
One can argue that tying the centre-back down to a new contract is the best piece of business that Spurs have done this summer.
