Thomas Frank makes prediction for Cristian Romero after signing new Tottenham contract
Thomas Frank is over the moon that Cristian Romero has put pen to paper on a new Tottenham Hotspur contract, and the Dane has revealed that the centre-back was keen on the extra leadership responsibility.
Tottenham announced on Monday that Romero has signed a four-year contract at the club, with the development coming out of the blue.
The development comes as a huge win for the Lilywhites as it was widely reported that Romero wanted to join Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.
The fact that Thomas Frank handed the Argentine the captain’s armband two weeks ago was evidence that he was committed to the Tottenham cause, and the Dane has now expressed his delight at the defender’s new contract.
Thomas Frank claims Romero is one of the best in the Premier League
The Spurs head coach admits that the contract development comes as a huge boost to him, his coaching staff, and everyone associated with Tottenham, given how important Romero is to the side.
The 51-year-old revealed that he has always admired the centre-back from afar, and that he has not been disappointed since he began working with him at Spurs.
When asked about Romero’s new contract, Frank told Tottenham’s official website: “Of course, extremely happy. He’s a very important player for us, just been named captain, so that speaks for itself.
“For me, he’s one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and, to have him locked down long-term, every fan, me, staff, should be extremely happy. It also shows he’s committed to the journey we’re on and the future and the bits we’re building together. Very happy.
“I always thought he was one of the better centre-backs. Then you realise that when you get to work with him closely for the past six weeks, you get to know the person a little bit and also clearly his strengths and development areas.
“What he can bring on the ball: he’s extremely composed, finds the right passes, his aggression in duels and commitment and willingness to win for the team, is defending in the box is extremely good and then he’s also a set piece threat.”
Frank expects Cristian Romero to thrive as Tottenham captain
The Danish coach took his time to select his captain, and he revealed that it was a role that Romero always wanted.
Frank expects the additional leadership responsibility to bring the best out of the 27-year-old, who he expects to push those around him.
The Spurs boss added: “He will thrive under this captaincy. No doubt it was something he was hoping to be and wanted to be. When you have that approach, normally, people take another step up and really want to go to the next level in terms of leadership.
“I have no doubt he will drive the team and players and help in any way he can. There’s more responsibility, and we also need to remember he’s a young leader, so he will learn and be even better.”
