Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley – Premier League team news and preview

0

Tottenham Hotspur kick off their 2025/26 Premier League campaign on Saturday with a home clash against newly promoted Burnley.

It’s a new Tottenham Hotspur walking into a new Premier League season under new manager Thomas Frank. Fresh from ending a 17-year trophy drought after they lifted the UEFA Europa League in May after a 1-0 win over Manchester United under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs fans were finally spared from the familiar ‘trophyless’ taunts this summer.

They almost made it two trophies in the space of three months just a few days ago, going 2-0 up against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup thanks to goals from both centre-backs, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, only to concede twice late on and lose 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

While the ending was cruel, the performance was praised by many. This was a Tottenham side that kept Europe’s most fearsome attack at bay for long spells, a stark contrast to the defensive fragility of the previous season.

It was a pre-season to be encouraged by too, with just one defeat (against Bayern Munich) alongside wins over Arsenal and Reading, plus draws against Wycombe, Luton and Newcastle.

Burnley, meanwhile, bounced straight back to the top flight after finishing Championship runners-up to Leeds United last season. Under Scott Parker, they’ve had a mixed summer. Their only win in pre-season came against Huddersfield, with a draw against Shrewsbury and defeats to Stoke and Lazio.

What time does Tottenham vs Burnley kick off?

Tottenham Hotspur vs Burnley: Head to head record

The two sides last met in the 2023/24 season, when Spurs, then under Ange Postecoglou, won all three encounters acros the league and FA Cup. Burnley have not beaten Tottenham since 2019.

In the ten games since that defeat, only one has ended in a draw, and Spurs have won the rest.

Tottenham team news

Thomas Frank confirmed there are no fresh injury concerns from the Super Cup clash. Destiny Udogie is progressing well but will not be involved.

Yves Bissouma returns to the squad after a disciplinary absence against PSG, while Dominic Solanke, who made a brief substitute appearance in Udine, should will be hoping for more minutes.

Long-term absentees include James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Radu Dragușin, Kota Takai and Bryan Gil.

Spurs remain without a recognised creative No. 10, with talks ongoing for Eberechi Eze and Manchester City’s Savinho, meaning Frank may again deploy a system that bypasses the traditional playmaker role.

Burnley team news

Burnley have been very busy in the transfer market, signing 13 players, including treble winner Kyle Walker, Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, and Armando Broja from Chelsea. They’re also exploring a move for former Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen, though no deal is imminent.

Scott Parker has a near full-strength squad. Long-term absentees Zeki Amdouni and Manuel Benson remain sidelined. Several other players are doubtful, including Zian Flemming, Bashir Humphreys, Jordan Beyer, Connor Roberts and Dubravka.

Kyle Walker is expected to start against his old club, while Armando Broja may not be risked from the outset.

Predicted Tottenham line-up

Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Sarr, Palhinha, Bentancur; Kudus, Richarlison, Odobert.

Thomas Frank deployed a back five against PSG, with three centre-backs as the regular pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were joined by Kevin Danso, and full-backs pushed high up the pitch before dropping back when out of possession to contain arguably Europe’s best attack.

It is unlikely he will use the same setup against Burnley, and we can expect him to revert to a front three instead of the front two seen in the Super Cup. That would mean Wilson Odobert, the standout performer on the left during pre-season, returning to that wing role.

Additionally, Richarlison could once again step in for Solanke, with the England striker still building up his fitness having missed pre-season.

Our prediction

Burnley are one of the few lower-table sides without a track record of troubling Spurs, and we expect Thomas Frank’s men to begin their league campaign with a statement win.

Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha both impressed in the Super Cup and should enjoy a strong Premier League debut.

For the visitors, Kyle Walker’s experience will be key, even if his best days are behind him while Marcus Edwards will also likely face his old side.

Former Tottenham Under-18 manager Scott Parker’s side, who conceded only 16 league goals last season, will face a far sterner defensive test here, as Tottenham’s superior quality upfront should ultimately help them come out on top.

Predicted score: Tottenham 4-0 Burnley.
