Thomas Frank provides update on Tottenham captaincy ahead of UEFA Super Cup final against PSG

0

Thomas Frank has offered a clear update on when Tottenham will appoint a new captain, giving supporters a definitive timeline ahead of a huge season opener.

Thomas Frank is currently preparing his Tottenham Hotspur side for one of their biggest games yet, with Spurs set for the chance to lift silverware in their very first competitive match of the season.

UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain await Europa League winners Tottenham in Udine, Italy, as both sides prepare to lock horns in the UEFA Super Cup final.

Frank heads into this fixture on the back of a heavy defeat to Bayern Munich in his final pre-season game, and it comes shortly after the departure of former club captain Heung-min Son to LAFC.

Spurs will name new captain before UEFA Super Cup final

At present, Tottenham remain without an official club captain, with Thomas Frank yet to confirm who will take the armband following Son’s exit.

It was widely expected that Frank would announce his captain in the days before the PSG game, but he has now outlined a different schedule.

Speaking to Football.london, Frank revealed that the new captain will be named on Wednesday, while the club’s leadership group will be finalised by the end of the month.

He said: “The captain will be named tomorrow in the team and the leadership group will be known by the end of the month.”

Romero leading the race for Spurs captaincy

The former Brentford boss has already made it clear what he expects from his Spurs captain, stating that he wants someone capable of unifying the squad.

Son served as captain with distinction and was supported by players such as Cristian Romero and James Maddison, both of whom have worn the armband in his absence.

Romero, who acted as vice-captain under Ange Postecoglou, remains the leading candidate given his pre-season leadership role. However, with Spurs boasting several experienced figures, the final decision will be an intriguing one.
