Tottenham still eyeing experienced midfielder despite landing Joao Palhinha

0

Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to keep an eye on the situation of an experienced number six, but their Premier League rivals have moved to the front of the queue to land the player.

Last week, Joao Palhinha became Tottenham’s fourth signing of the summer window, with the former Fulham man shoring up a big gap in the Spurs squad.

Thomas Frank hailed Palhinha’s ability to break up play, and admitted that he is different to the other midfielders he has at his disposal.

It has now emerged that Tottenham may not be done strengthening their midfield department just yet. It was previously reported that Spurs had their eye on Douglas Luiz, and it has now emerged that the Juventus man is still on the North London club’s radar.

Spurs are one of several Premier League clubs eyeing Douglas Luiz

This update comes from CaughtOffside, who claim that Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to keep their eye on Luiz’s situation.

The report says that the former Aston Villa man is also of interest to Liverpool, Everton, Leeds and West Ham, but at the moment, it is Nottingham Forest who are leading the race for the midfielder.

It is alleged that it would take an offer of €40m (£34.6m) to price the 27-year-old away from the Allianz Stadium.

The publication adds that Luiz has already turned down a move to Fenerbahce and has made it clear that his preference is to return to the Premier League.

Is this a sign that a senior Tottenham star’s future is uncertain?

It will come as a surprise to Spurs fans that the Lilywhites are continuing to track Luiz after getting a deal for Palhinha over the line.

That suggests that there could be some uncertainty over the future of Rodrigo Bentancur, who has just one year left on his contract at Tottenham.

Spurs have been trying to tie Bentancur down to a new contract for several months, but there is no indication at the moment that the club are close to reaching a breakthrough with the Uruguayan.
